Upakarmas

1: Body and Skin Surface Karmas

Abhyanga

The Foundation of External Therapy

Abhyanga is the quintessential Ayurvedic full-body massage performed with rhythmic, synchronized movements and specific herb-infused oils. Unlike a standard spa massage, the choice of oil is tailored to the individual’s Prakriti (constitution) or current imbalance. The oil is often cured with dozens of herbs and heated to a specific temperature to ensure it penetrates all seven layers of the skin within minutes.

Benefits:

Udvartana

Herbal Scrub & Deep Tissue Detox

Udvartana is a specialized “dry” karma that involves a vigorous deep-tissue massage using finely ground herbal powders or pastes instead of oil. The strokes are performed in the Pratiloma direction (opposite to the direction of hair growth), which opens the pores and stimulates the burning of subcutaneous fat.

Benefits:

Lepa

Medicinal Skin Coating

Lepa refers to the application of a thick medicinal paste over specific areas of the body or the entire skin surface. These pastes are made by mixing herbal powders with liquids like water, milk, rose water, or herbal decoctions. The paste is applied against the hair follicles to ensure the active botanical ingredients are absorbed into the skin’s pores.

Benefits:

Keshya Lep

Nourishing Hair & Scalp Mask

This potent herbal mask is a targeted treatment for hair vitality. Fresh Fenugreek (Methi) and seeds provide essential proteins and nicotinic acid to curb hair fall, while Aloe Vera and Coriander deeply cool the scalp and eliminate dandruff.

Benefits:

Sarv-Dehik Lep

Full-Body Herbal Paste Therapy

Sarv-Dehik Lep is a comprehensive skin-rejuvenating karma involving the application of a warm, medicated herbal paste over the entire body. This treatment works by drawing out deep-seated toxins from the sweat glands and improving peripheral blood circulation.

Benefits:

Mruttika Chikitsa (Mud Therapy)

Full-Body Mud Therapy

This “Earth Element” therapy utilizes specially treated, mineral-rich medicinal mud applied to the whole body to absorb environmental toxins and metabolic waste. As the mud dries, it improves skin elasticity and acts as a powerful cooling agent for Pitta (heat) related disorders.

Benefits:

Localized Bastis

Oil Pooling Therapy

Localized external Bastis involve creating a reservoir on the skin surface using a ring of black gram dough. This ring is then filled with warm, medicated oil that is kept at a constant temperature for 20 to 30 minutes. Common variations include Kati Basti (for the lower back), Griva Basti (for the neck), and Janu Basti (for the knees).

Benefits:

Patta Bandhan

Medicinal Bandaging & Immobilization

Patta Bandhana is the classical art and science of “Bandaging and Immobilization.” According to the master surgeon Sushruta, the success of any wound treatment depends heavily on the quality of the bandage. The dressing material is often soaked in medicated oils or ghees that possess antimicrobial and tissue-regenerating properties.

Benefits:

2 :Specialized Heat Therapies

Patra Pinda Sweda

Leaf Bolus Therapy

Patra Pinda Sweda is a revitalizing treatment where the bolus is prepared from fresh medicinal leaves, such as Eranda (Castor), Nirgundi, and Arka, which are finely chopped and fried in herbal oils with grated coconut, lemon, and garlic. The heated boluses are dipped in warm medicated oil and applied with specific strokes.

Benefits:

Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda

Rice & Milk Bolus Therapy (Navarakizhi)

This is a highly specialized, nourishing therapy using a specific variety of rice called Shashtika Shali, cooked in a decoction of Bala and cow’s milk. The cooked rice is tied into boluses, which are then dipped into a warm milk-herb decoction and massaged over the body.

Benefits:

Valuka Sweda

Heated Sand Bolus Therapy

Valuka Sweda is a unique “dry” heat therapy where the bolus is filled with clean, fine sand that has been washed, dried, and heated to a specific temperature. This treatment is specifically indicated for conditions where oil-based therapies might be harmful.

Benefits:

Churna Pinda Sweda

Herbal Powder Bolus Therapy (Podikizhi)

In Churna Pinda Sweda, the bolus is filled with a mixture of dry herbal powders. Depending on the patient’s condition, the boluses are either used dry or dipped in warm oil. This therapy focuses on drying and scraping, making it ideal for clearing blockages in the body’s channels.

Benefits:

3 :Specialized Cranial and Sensory Karmas

Netra Tarpana

Eye Rejuvenation Therapy (Eye Bath)

Netra Tarpana is a specialized restorative treatment for the eyes. A circular enclosure made of black gram dough is constructed around the eye orbits. This reservoir is then filled with lukewarm, medicated Shata-dhauta Ghrita (100-times washed ghee) or Triphala Ghrita.

Benefits:

Karna Purana

Aural Medication Therapy

Karna Purana is the procedure of filling the ear canal with warm, medicated oils. The ear is a primary seat of Vata Dosha, and because the ears are closely linked to the nervous system, this therapy has a grounding effect on the entire body.

Benefits:

Shirodhara

Continuous Cranial Drip (Brain Detox)

Shirodhara is perhaps the most famous Ayurvedic therapy, involving a continuous, steady stream of warm medicated oil, buttermilk, or decoction poured onto the Ajna Chakra (the forehead/third eye). This rhythmic pouring induces a profound state of relaxation by stabilizing the Prana Vayu.
